Women in power is a moderately new concept in our society which first began with the woman suffrage rights in the 1920s. I personally think that it is a great thing. The way that women were treated before the 1920s was dis-respectable and degrading. Now women have equal rights with men, and are able to have important jobs in the government. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth asked the spirits to "unsex" her. This meant that she wanted to become stronger and more powerful like a man apposed to weak and feeble like a woman. I believe that women deserve the right to hold power, but I'm not sure if I would vote for a woman in a powerful position such as president of the United  States. Men and women are a lot different. Not all men are more powerful and stronger than women, but most men have more will power, strength, and worry less about emotions, so therefore I think would make better powerful leaders.  For example; Oprah is a very strong and powerful woman in the media. She is a great person with a lot of confidence and can do pretty much anything if she puts her mind to it. However, she is a very loving and emotional person, and I'm not sure if she could handle the pressure of holding a powerful position. Women are admired for their kindness, love, compassion, etc. Those are all great qualities in a person but not one to hold a position of power. They do however deserve respect and the opportunity to run for those positions if they so please.  On the other  hand, there are the exceptions to the stereotypes of women. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand is a very strong willed powerful person. She can put on a hard face and make sure that her opinions are known and that she gets her way. However, as the article stated, she cried in front of the cameras, which was a big shock to everyone. Women deserve the opportunities and respect, but in hard times we cannot have a leader in tears be strong enough to lead us through.

  1. Hi Alex,

I enjoyed reading your response to the prompt. You make some good points-- that women's rights and societal status have really improved since the 1920s. You are also honest about your belief that women deserve the chance to run for elected office, but that you would hesitate in voting for a woman for president. Please take note of your overall word count. This entry is a little short. Nice job.
